Dear
Client (and furry friends),
|
|
| First of all, keep in mind that these photographs do not need to be artistic or perfect photo-album quality prints. I need simple snapshots showing details of your pet's features. Please loan me any decent additional photos you possess, all lent material will be returned to you. · | |
|
DO NOT USE A FLASH! Flashes not only turn animals eyes red, but black and dark colored fur reflects the white of the flash. Flashes also create an overall flat effect. · |

·
Take photographs outside, but not entirely in direct sunlight. Find a
diffused light situation such as under a tree (watch out for too many
sunspots shinning through the leaves), or outside on an overcast day.
A great time of day to take pictures is between the hours of 3p.m. And
6 p.m., when the sun is not directly overhead and light is warm.
|
|
Also,
include a few shots in a strong light (even direct sunlight) so I can
clearly see the color of the dog. ·

The photographer must be on eye level with the animal. Place the pet on a table or chair, either kneel down in front of them or sit opposite in a chair. |
|
If
you have a large dog, try putting the dog on some steps and remain below
as you aim the camera upwards. You can also lie, kneel, or sit on the
ground, or have someone else hold the dog in his or her arms. Most bad
photographs of animals are due to standing up and shooting down at them
which distorts perspective. ·

Depending on the personality of your animal, decide if you need an assistant to help you or not. If you have a friend helping you hold the animal, make sure to hold the animal in a natural as possible position so that there are no distortions in the fur, such as wrinkles in the neck or body. · While shooting you will need patience as animals move around a lot. |
|
Remember
to wait and watch for good 3/4 and frontal head -shots, for the animal's
ears to prick up, and for alert expressions. Try to encourage the animal
to prick up their ears by calling their name, snapping your fingers, shaking
a box of treats, asking, "where's the ball"? etc......You know your pet!!!
However, do not confuse them with too much stimulation, sometimes the
pets get fed up with taking photographs. In this case take a break, wait
for another day, have a drink, give your pet a kiss, relax, and don't
get frustrated!!!!

Some animals actually act like fashion models, if that is your dog or cat sign them up to an agency as that is a rare quality. · Shoot at least two rolls of 36 color print exposures. It is possible to look at the negatives and select to print only the pictures that look O.K. Keep in mind that many of your pictures are going to be useless. · |
|
Last
of all, have fun! You are on your way to having an original piece of fine
art commemorating your best animal friend. Whether a personal indulgence,
or a very special gift for someone, my paintings are eternal family heirlooms.
Most of my clients consider their animals as important members of the
family tree.
